Srixon 765 Driver

Srixon 765 Driver Review

What’s that shiny black object flying at supersonic speeds and launching missiles through the clear blue sky? It’s not the sleek body of a stealth fighter but the Z Series 765 Driver by Srixon. The combination of the power wave sole, stretch-flex cup face and new lightweight crown paired with the Project X HZRDUS black shaft makes it a lethal combination for any golf course. Pair it with their new Z Star XV golf balls and it will officially take your game to a whole new level.

Srixon has launched what I believe is not only one of the best performing drivers I have played but one of the best looking clubs on the market. This Srixon Z765 driver went through the utmost precision down to every detail from the colorways to their performance features that sets this driver apart from all the others on the market. I like to call this driver War Machine since it’s so good that I bet Colonel Rhodes games this beast.

While testing this driver on the range to playing the first round I was blown away by the performance. The first time I took it to the range and sent a few balls out the back of the driving range, I knew this club was different. After suffering a rotator cuff tear earlier last year, causing me to miss out on a lot of golf from pain and surgery, this made everything better by knowing I still had my swing. Even better was the 765 driver made explosive distance easy to achieve but this thing is so damn accurate it’s silly. I was able to take lines on the course that you can only do when you have complete confidence in your club and your abilities.

This driver will allow you to take the most aggressive lines that most players think would be crazy and too risky of a decision. However, this is the Z765 and you can do extraordinary things like hitting drives that need to carry a hazard over 300 yards. This allows an approach shot with a wedge compared to a mid-iron.

My overall impression of this driver is that it’s a masterpiece, and I believe it will help me hit more fairways off the tee like when I was injury free and shooting scratch golf. Being able to hit long drives that are exactly where you want is crucial. This allows you to hit shorter clubs into greens that produce more birdie opportunities every round. Now hit up your local golf shop and get fitted for your own War Machine to destroy all the other drivers on the course.

Srixon 765 Irons Review

What’s forged perfection that’s handcrafted from Japan and has officially replaced my Mizuno MP64’s from my golf bag? It’s the Srixon 765 irons, which are some of the best feeling irons I have ever hit in my life. Since I received these irons in the mail I have put them through the ringer. We are talking hitting these every day for the past few weeks with multiple rounds and range sessions at lunch.

After tearing my rotator cuff in January and being laid up for most the year dealing with injuries, these irons have been one of the brightest moments for me.

Right out of the box these irons were already a winner with shining bright chrome and clean lines of the muscle cavities. The masters at Srixon have manufactured what I believe to be the best iron to hit the market in the last few years. The thin topline makes it look like a blade without any unnecessary thickness to the width of this iron. It’s a perfect example of top notch R&D and keen eye for artistic design. I wouldn’t change anything about the look of these beauties.

Where these clubs really shine is in their top-of-the-line performance. How would you like an iron that combines deadly accuracy with more distance, playability and will shave strokes off your rounds? You are in luck because they are available right now. After playing these for weeks, I have been able to move the ball any direction and with some of the tightest dispersion I have ever had in my golf career. Even better is the penetrating ball flight these irons create has allowed for pin hunting with no fear to go after any flag on the course.

When hitting these irons onto greens, I have never seen this kind of performance that lets me easily dictate distance and spin control. This is key when finding a perfect iron for your game, and has given me the ability to hit these farther than my Mizuno’s, which I thought would never leave my bag. This added distance from the Srixon 765 irons give me the opportunity to hit a higher lofted club to dial in the tightest approach shots.

Overall I believe Srixon has created a gem especially for players like myself that love the feel of a blade but the forgiveness of the muscle cavity. Lower handicap players wanting more performance in their game should definitely take a look at these irons. The 765’s are magic, and I am already seeing what these monsters are made of, and I believe this is the missing key to my golf game on finally shooting the best scores of my life after all the injuries my body has endured.

My Srixon 765 irons are 3-PW with 1” extensions and Project X 6.5 shafts. When looking to purchase your Srixon’s, make sure you find an authorized dealer and get fitted properly because I know how good they will be for you when you become the envy of all your friends this golf season.

iFitGolf the Ultimate Golf Fitting Experience

Shop Small Businesses

Imagine walking into a sporting goods store looking for the latest driver on the market. A 17-year-old kid walks over from the baseball section when he sees you rummaging through clubs and wants to add to his sales total for the day. He sets you up with a stiff shaft when realistically you should be playing a regular or x-stiff depending on your swing. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people fall into this old trap of shopping at the big box stores since they think, “I can get a hell of a deal on a golf club.”

The problem with this mentality is that the majority of the time you will find is the staff not only lacks knowledge of proper golf fitting but needs to sell all their product “off the rack”. However, we all know is the wrong approach when selling golf clubs because one product doesn’t fit all. That’s why you need to seek experts that want to see you play better golf.

ifitgolf logo

This held true when I recently had the great opportunity to get properly fitted for my Mizuno MP-64 irons at iFitGolf in Folsom, California.

iFitGolf is a small business that has dedicated golf fitting experts that are some of the best in the business compared to other experiences I have had in the past. The owner, Bobby Siravo, and his highly-trained staff utilize expert knowledge and cutting-edge technology to make sure you have the best setup customized to your unique swing.

Let the Fitting Begin

The Mizuno MP-64’s are still my irons of choice even though they were launched in 2013. The feel of these irons are second to none and performance has been great but I always believed they could be better. Since I injured my Achilles heel, the past few years I have had missed opportunities with hitting greens in regulation. I had KBS Tour shafts installed when I first received these irons but my high swing speed needed a better fit.

That’s when I decided to take the 45 minute drive from Rocklin to Folsom past all the big box golf stores to the real experts in the Sacramento area. It was worth every cent.

I began my fitting process by discussing with iFitGolf the problems I had experienced with my clubs and started hitting my 6 iron in the Trackman hitting bay. After 15 shots, I checked the dispersion of errant shots I would typically see in a round. Immediately they were able to diagnose my situation, and I began hitting a variety of shaft choices that would complement my swing.

Finally after testing they were able to narrow it down to a Project X when I started hitting the 6.0 consistently down the line with excellent launch angle and spin rates. But they didn’t stop there. Matt Hollinsead believed the 6.5 would actually be the perfect fit and took the time to hunt down that shaft in the store to make sure it would be exactly what I needed. He was right. I ended up hitting 10 shots with a 7 iron, all of them dead straight at 200 yards. Now that is consistency I can live with in the future, which in turn will translate into playing better golf.

So now that you have decided to take your golf game to the next level and get properly fitted, remember to shop small business that have experts that will make you play better and shoot lower scores today. If you live in the Sacramento, California area I highly suggest stopping by iFitgolf and see what they can do for your game.

Product Review: Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0 Wedges

I couldn’t be more excited to receive the new Cleveland RTX 2.0 wedges. Not just because Cleveland makes the best wedges in golf but because the Rotex technology is a game changer. RTX HawaiiYou ask, how can you say that? Well during this past year, with my Rotex 1.0 56* wedge, I was able to slam my first Hole In One from 138 yards by knocking it 4 feet past and spinning it right into the cup. Not only was it the best feeling in the world but solidified my commitment to a lifelong Cleveland wedge user.

However, the real story with the new RTX 2.0 wedges is the new sole / bound grind combinations that gives players unlimited versatility of their custom wedge. So buckle up for more spin, more high fives and lower scores.

Product Review:

Look 10/10:

Last year when I unwrapped the original Rotex wedges I thought there’s no way you can make this wedge look any better. Well Cleveland again has proved me wrong and made the cleanest looking wedge on the market. The same tour satin and black satin wedges are available in the new RTX 2.0 wedges.

They kept the same great look of the Rotex 1.0 wedges with a few updates to give it a more sleek design.  I give the overall look a 10/10.

Distance Control & Accuracy 9/10:

Distance control and accuracy is crucial in being able to score and shoot lower scores. I believe the most important shot in golf is the 100 yards and in. Putting is important but if your approach shots aren’t getting close, you can only try and drain so many 45 footers.

The ability to have full customization with sole and bounce will elevate your game to a whole new level, especially with the Rotex face technology. Playing these wedges the past couple of weeks, and using GAME GOLF to track my shots, I have been able to hit over 70% of my approach shots from inside 100 yards to inside 40 feet. I give the overall distance control and accuracy a 9/10.

Feel 10/10:clevelandwedge

Everyone has their own take about feel but my personal experience with these wedges, especially with the blades, is that you receive instant feedback on a shot with RTX 2.0 wedges. It has allowed me to dial in approach shots better than ever, helping me get back to an almost scratch handicap.

The versatility of the 3 grind options allows you to zero in on the perfect wedge for your game.  I give the overall feel a 10/10.

Spin 10/10:

The combination of the sharper grooves, laser milling and Rotex face will give you maximum spin unlike anything on the market. Cleveland changed the face of spin the past year and taken it to the limits allowed by the USGA.

I have played these wedges in Sacramento, San Francisco and Hawaii and with all those variants of different grass types and playing conditions, they performed immaculately. I promise this will be the best purchase you will make in years. I give the overall spin rating a 10/10.

Overall Rating 39/40:

The overall performance of the Cleveland 588 2.0 RTX wedges go above and beyond.  Wedge customization has been taken to a whole new level with the combination of 2 different head designs and 3 different sole grinds makes these wedges the most versatile wedge family ever for Cleveland. This is a great direction for the best wedge company in golf.

These wedges are worth every cent. Feel free to find your nearest dealer and give them a try yourself (DEALER LOCATOR LINK).

TECHNOLOGY

The evolution of the 588 Rotex wedge started by listening to the top players in the world. Listening to the demands a Keegan Bradley, Graeme McDowell or Hideki Matsuyama faces, week in and week out, from 125 yards and in. We then looked at what factors lead everyday players to succeed or fail in the scoring zone. After hundreds of hours of interviews and field testing, we identified a common need for all golfers, regardless of ability level: Versatility.

From that research we developed 3 distinct wedge grinds in two different head designs that are proven to optimize the short game for players of all abilities. For the improving wedge player, a more forgiving cavity back design, and for the better player, a traditional muscle-back head shape.

Add to that three distinct grind options and the 588 Rotex 2.0 becomes our most versatile wedge family ever.

Tour Zip Grooves

Fourth generation Tour Zip Grooves feature 8% larger walls and sharper radii than ever before. Through testing we have seen that more grass, dirt, and moisture are channeled away from the face for cleaner contact and more consistent spin.

Rotex 2.0 Face Pattern

Advanced, 2-pass micro milling pattern provides a strategically designed roughness close to the USGA limit. This leads to increased friction and more spin, especially from inconsistent lies.

Laser Milling

Fine tunes the micro-roughness for more consistency and texture across the face. This allows us to reach the USGA roughness limit, and pushing this boundary lends itself to increased spin on pitch and chip shots.

We created three distinct grind options for the 588 RTX 2.0 wedge family. This comprehensive system has made it easier than ever for any golfer to build a wedge set that maximizes performance based on turf conditions, playing preference, and skill level. By progressively varying the wedge’s sole design according to bounce, we have created an unmatched array of scoring tools that players can simply and easily identify as the best options for their game.

Low Bounce Grind (1 Dot)

The Low Bounce Grind provides the lowest effective bounce, allowing players to be aggressive from anywhere around the green. The combination of a trailing edge grind and maximum relief from the heel and toe lets the player be creative from even the tightest of lies. Low Bounce Grind is ideal for firm conditions and/or players with a more shallow attack angle.

KEY FEATURES

  • Trailing Edge Grind + maximum heel/toe relief
  • Lowest Effective Bounce
  • Keeps leading edge close to ground for aggressive lob shots, yet provides stability on square-faced full shots

Standard Bounce Grind (2 Dot)

The Standard Bounce Grind provides a mid-effective bounce, offering players a wedge that performs well in most conditions. The combination of a trailing edge grind and moderate relief from the heel and toe gives the player the perfect combination of versatility and forgiveness. Standard Bounce Grind is ideal for a wide variety of conditions and/or players with a neutral attack angle.

FEATURES

  • Trailing Edge Grind + moderate heel/toe relief
  • Mid Effective Bounce
  • All-around playability and versatility, allowing golfer to execute a variety of shots from most playing conditions

Full Sole (3 Dot)

The Full Sole Grind provides a slightly higher effective bounce, allowing players to smoothly glide through any surface with ease. Consistent sole width gives players confidence when striking their ball on full shots while maintaining versatility around the green. Full Sole Grind is ideal for softer conditions and/or players with a steep attack angle.

FEATURES

  • Constant Sole Width
  • Higher Effective Bounce
  • Allows the golfer to use the sole to their advantage around the greens. Full shape gives stability on full shots, however the curvature in the sole still allows player to open the face.

More Speed. Better Launch: Nike Golf’s Vapor Fairway Woods

BEAVERTON, Ore. (October 13, 2014) – Nike Golf innovation begins with the golf athlete in mind – always. Nike engineers and designers took the inspiration and insights from Nike Nike Vapor 3 Woodathletes to drive the technology of Nike’s new Vapor Speed and Vapor Flex fairway woods, available on January 30, 2015.

“Athlete insights drove significant chassis refinement in the Vapor fairway woods.” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “Our athletes wanted tighter but forgiving leading edges, fuller profiles and added ball speed.  We’ve delivered that with the synergy of our FlyBeam and compression channel technologies.”

The Vapor Speed fairway woods have a 25% larger footprint with a lower and deeper Center of Gravity (CG) than previous Nike models.

“Athletes including Tiger Woods requested larger face profiles in fairway woods, but it was vital that we do that without compromising ball speed or optimal launch conditions,” said Radcliffe.  “We successfully modified the chassis by sloping the crown to lower the CG which optimized launch characteristics across the family.”

Like the new Vapor drivers, the Vapor Speed fairway woods feature Nike’s new FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back design, a re-engineered Compression Channel and a NexCOR face – all combining to stabilize the chassis, maximize ball speed and promote longer and straighter distance. The low CG provides a high launch with a lower-spin flight.Nike Vapor 3 Wood

The Vapor Flex fairway woods highlight the same technologies found in the Vapor Speed on a more compact chassis, except the Vapor Flex has added Nike’s FlexLoft 2 adjustability system, allowing the golf athlete the functionality of five lofts and three face angles within 15 different settings.

The new, improved FlexLoft system is five grams (30%) lighter without compromising function, which leads to a CG that is up to 2mm lower on the Vapor Flex fairways. The redistribution of mass creates more stability, better launch conditions and faster swing speeds. Another benefit of FlexLoft 2 is its forward and backward compatibility. Golfers with previous generations of Covert can use shafts with the original adaptor in the new head or vice versa.

GAME GOLF: The Friday 5 with Sean Rivers

This week, GAME GOLF caught up with Sean Rivers – an avid golfer, blogger & golf course designer to talk about his involvement in the golfing industry, his use of GAME GOLF and his thoughts on winning our first Bridgestone Golf Long Drive Challenge!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself Sean.

My name is Sean Rivers. I am originally from Great Falls, Montana but now live in Northern California. I work as a Design Assistant for Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design, and I am also a golf equipment blogger for my personal website, Seanmrivers.com.

2. What is your earliest memory from playing golf?

I started playing golf around the age of 5. At that time, my dad would take me to the driving range or we would play our local municipal course. Growing up, nothing compared to the challenge of the greatest sport in the world. Playing competitive golf early on led me to receive a golf scholarship to Carroll College in Helena, Montana. I have always been hooked on golf!

3. How did you first hear about GAME GOLF and what have been your first impressions of using the system?

When I first saw GAME GOLF it was on their Kickstarter page, and I knew this product would be a winner. I started following the organization, and I was stoked once I heard it was hitting the market. I saw the initial reviews and people I follow on Twitter were using it, so I had to jump on board. Immediately, I saw the benefits of this product. They have data you only wish you could have had years ago.

GAME GOLF has helped tremendously by giving me data to tell my PGA Professional instructor, Shanon Hoyt, and Aimpoint instructor, Peter Brown, on what I needed to work on to help lower my scores and finally get closer to being scratch again.

4. Congratulations on your recent victory in the Bridgestone Golf sponsored Long Drive Challenge. Are you a fan of GAME GOLF’s new Challenge feature & tell us your secret to hit that 414 yard drive!

The Challenges on GAME GOLF have to be my favorite feature. Getting involved in the GAME GOLF community through contests such as GIR, lowest score, longest drive, etc., is a great way to still be competitive with a community even though you might just being playing 9 after work.

My friend, Rusty Cage, sent me a message one day on Twitter about the newest competition on GAME GOLF which was the Bridgestone Long Ball Challenge. It couldn’t have come at a better time since I had been playing great and was on my way to Maui for my vacation. I knew I could really go after it with Kaanapali and Kapalua on my play list while I was out there this time.

My 414 yard drive came on Hole 7 at the Plantation Course. I just massacred my Cleveland 588 Custom driver, and when I finally reached my Nike RZN Black golf ball in the fairway, I knew it ended up going over 400 yards. I couldn’t be happier that I finally broke the 400 yard barrier on a drive. I have gotten close in the past but it felt great to finally reach that accomplishment.

My secret – I widen my stance and start the club back wide and making sure to keep clubhead low to ground.  After getting to the top of my swing I make sure to start it the same speed as the takeaway.  The closer I get to to the bottom I just let it rip and make sure to finish with my belt buckle facing left of target to make sure my whole body has driven through the ball.  It’s all about speed and solid contact.

5. How do you think technology like GAME GOLF has changed the face of golf?

I believe GAME GOLF is a game changer for the golf community. I haven’t seen any product on the market that competes to the amount of amazing data that it collects. Knowing the average distance I hit every club makes club selection simple since I know the exact club I need to hit on a shot. In my opinion, GAME GOLF will help more golfers shoot better scores from having revolutionary data at the tip of their fingertips.

Check out Sean’s GAME GOLF profile here and challenge him to your very own GAME GOLF Challenge!

Nike Golf Unveils Vapor Iron Franchise: The Iron Reimagined

Nike Golf has reimagined golf irons with the introduction of its new Vapor franchise –Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo, and Vapor Speed. The modern family of irons was unveiled to a global media audience today near New York City during an event featuring Nike athletes Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and celebrity golf aficionado Jimmy Fallon.Vapor_Oven1_large

The Vapor irons blend the detailed craftsmanship of Nike’s master club builder, Mike Taylor; the engineering expertise of The Oven; and the imagination of Nike designers. The result: a family of irons featuring a pinnacle Nike innovation called Modern Muscle.

Modern Muscle is a modification of a standard muscle-back design that moves the iron’s center of gravity to the center of the clubface, crafted to yield more efficient and pure strikes. The innovation has already contributed to a major championship victory when Rory McIlroy put a prototype Vapor Pro Combo 2-iron (MM Proto) in the bag and went on to win the 2014 Open Championship.

While Rory was the first to win with Modern Muscle in the bag, the innovation itself started with insights from Tiger Woods.

“Our engineers and designers at The Oven have been working with Tiger for quite some time to evolve this innovation and bring it to the golf athlete,” said Rob Arluna, Nike Golf’s Global Golf Club Business Director.

“We started with the traditional blade and asked what could be done to enhance its performance and modernize the design while maintaining a traditional, pure look at address. Thanks to Tiger’s inspiration, coupled with Rory’s added insights, we made the Vapor Pro blades feel and perform better with a technology advantage over the traditional blade. We then extended that innovation and design to Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed.”

“Years back when we tested the parts with adjusted weighting, I immediately noticed a more balanced feel and more consistent performance,” said Woods. “Working with the club team to bring this concept to life was a great experience.”Vapor Pro

“We were inspired by the fact that traditional blades all look the same and challenged ourselves to rally around a big idea taken from Tiger’s insights,” said Nike Golf Design Director, Andrew Oldknow. “Our goal was to create a visual look on the exterior of the club that defines what’s happening on the inside. Shifting weight away from the heel of the club for a more precise center of gravity is what defines Modern Muscle, and that is distinctly visible across the three iron designs.

With a modernized take on the classic blade profile, the Vapor Pro is Nike Golf’s most precise iron to date. The Vapor Pro Combo has the clean lines and workability of a blade with the power of a distance iron – resulting in the ultimate blend of precision and power. The Vapor Speed delivers pure power for the golf athlete who wants maximum distance and forgiveness through the set.

Within Nike, the name Nike Vapor is synonymous with the company’s most premium innovations that boldly elevate athlete performance. The Nike Vapor name is featured in other categories within Nike, including baseball and global football.

The Vapor irons will be available on nike.com and at select retailers Oct. 31.

So keep your eyes open because they will be landing in your local shops soon enough and I already know how good the Rotex 1.0 was because it delivered my first Hole In One this summer so I’m excited to take the 2.0 wedges out today and see how they perform.

Big Picture
With Rotex 2.0, we set out to give golfers more control and increased versatility with their wedges, which ultimately leads to lower scores.

We added control by improving the Rotex Face for more consistent spin from all conditions. We also created 3 new versatile sole grinds to provide the best turf interaction for a variety of player types.

Lastly, we’ll be providing more wedge fitting options than any other company to insure the golfers can select the proper wedges for their games.

Rotex 2.0 Face
Maintains maximum spin from the fairway while increasing spin from the rough by ~15%.

Grooves: Steeper groove walls produce sharper radii. We made the walls steeper to increase groove volume, and we made the grooves sharper to increase spin on wet shots.

Milling Pattern: A new 2-pass Micro Milling increases milling depth by 30% and width by 14%. The passes are timed so the pattern peaks between each pair of grooves.

Laser Milling: Laser pattern improves roughness consistency so we can get closer to the USGA regulations.
